Program Seeking Durable Pyrus for Small Sites

A cooperative project with the Landscape Plant Development Center (LPDC) is underway at Washington State University Puyallup targeting the development of durable new varieties of small-statured Pyrus (pear) trees. Durable plants tolerate difficult environmental and biological conditions like disease, drought, poor soil, extreme temperatures and pests. At the same time these new plants must have improved form, aesthetic qualities and landscape function. (click here to read entire article)

Beautiful, but hardy, shrubs can replace trees
Bobby Jensen teams up with reporter Allen Costantini who has a yard problem he needs help with. Allen lost a big tree from his front year during one of the summer storms. He's decided to fill the space with shrubs and asked Bobby for some help. They chose a shrub that was hybridized right here in Minnesota at the Landscape Plant Development Center run by Dr. Harold Pellett in Mound. Center Glow Ninebark is one of the growing number of shrubs and trees being developed to not only flower but give a longer season of interest.
