History

- Non-profit 501c(3) organization
- Founded in 1990 by Dr. Harold Pellett
- National cooperative organization
- Operate solely on contributed funds & royalties
- Headquartered in Minnesota
MISSION STATEMENT
To develop superior plants that are tolerant of insects, diseases and environmental stresses.
REASONS FOR ESTABLISHMENT

- To fill a need for a broader selection of landscape plants that are well adapted to survive and perform
- Very little effort is being devoted by either industry or governmental agencies to breeding and development of landscape plants
- The potential for developing better adapted plants with superior landscape qualities is significant
- Breeding of perennial plants (particularly trees and shrubs) is very expensive - the Center’s cooperative effort is more efficient and takes advantage of under-utilized resources
VISION
- Foster a collaborative national network of the best
scientists, horticulturists, and gardeners that will develop and introduce plants through the leverage of monetary, physical, and intellectual resources
- Establish LPDC research stations and a compliment of in-house scientists/personnel serving the Center's mission
- Identify and partner with public, private, and commercial entities to develop and introduce improved landscape plants
CENTER'S OPERATING PHILOSOPHY
- Fulfilling our mission is what is important
- Developing a large infrastructure is not our focus
- There is great value in collaboration among people, facilities and institutions across disciplines
- Capitalize on expertise, resources, and strengths of the participants
- Seek funding to provide the manpower needed to utilize facilities of cooperating organizations
